This Week's Food Focus is Strawberries

Strawberries, part of the Fragaria genus are an excellent source of vitamin C, which is surprising as there is little mention of it in most articles about them. They're also a good source of manganese, which helps regulate our metabolism, aids brain function and helps maintain a healthy nervous system. Strawberries are reported to help lower cholesterol, prevent constipation and suppress appetite. It's an added bonus that they taste so delicious!

For those in the know, eat strawberries at room temperature as they taste better.

Also known amongst top chefs is that if you add a sprinkling of black pepper to strawberries it counteracts the tartness and the sweetness of the strawberry is enhanced. A touch of balsamic vinegar adds another dimension too.

Yesterday afternoon my son and I were lucky enough to be able to collect some wild strawberries from our garden. There is simply nothing better than foraging, especially if it's on your doorstep!
